Description

This workshop will introduce participants into the study of vertebrate morphology using network models. Participants will learn the basics of anatomical network analysis: gathering information, building their own network models, analyzing basic properties, and interpreting the outcomes. The workshop combines theoretical introductions and computing examples/practices using the free programming environment R and the package igraph. Participants are encouraged to bring their own data for the hands-on-computer sessions (organizers will provide working data as well). Emphasis is placed on offering participants a wide overview to network modeling/analysis in vertebrate morphology and evo-devo, as well as free resources to carrying these tasks out.


Schedule

ANA1 (2:30–4:00PM, Forest Glen)

Opening introduction (~40 minutes): Introduction to network theory and applications in morphology (Diego Rasskin-Gutman)

Hands on computers I (~40 minutes): Gathering data, R code, generate models (Borja Esteve-Altava)


Coffee Break (4:00–4:30 PM)



ANA2 (4:30–6:00PM, Forest Glen)

Hands on computers II (~40 minutes): Analyzing network topology and modularity (Borja Esteve-Altava)

Discussion and round table (~40 minutes): Moderated by Rui Diogo


Requirements for active participants (others are free to watch)

  • Basic knowledge of R

  • Personal laptop (note: tables and power will be provided in Forest Glen)

  • Free software R installed

  • Free R-package “igraph” installed

  • (optional) data to create an anatomical network model, organizers will facilitate working examples

  • (optional) Free R-environment RStudio installed
